Hey I'm Chase, a mechanical engineering student (@VT 2028) specializing in robotics and AI reasoning / safety.
In my free time, I enjoy weightlifting, coaching swim, or tinkering with something.
Researching shape-memory-alloy actuators for biomimetic robotic ankle systems at VT's Hume Center, and prototyping a UAV camera-tracking module at MacHworks. Currently at the very start of a robotic arm project of my own.
Interested in how reasoning models perceive and act in unfamiliar environments, and in building that reasoning safely — currently building a reasoning loop for the ARC-AGI-3 benchmark that lets a small local model perceive, hypothesize, act, and self-correct in games it's never seen.
Primarily shoots landscapes, portraits, and my family's (slightly absurd) variety of cats and dogs. Currently experiementing with 35mm film photography and developing.
Nov 2025 - Present
Undergraduate Student Researcher at VT's Hume Center, in Dr. Scott Kennedy's Intelligent Materials for Biomimetic Sensors and Actuators Lab. I design, test, and analyze shape-memory-alloy-actuated robotic ankle systems, building a test rig to characterize parallel Flexinol wire arrays and presenting the results at the VT Hume Colloquium.
Sep 2025 - Present
Currently on the Avionics subteam working on servo harnessing and stress testing. Previously developed a camera module to track the Icarus UAV and other RC planes using a DSLR and Ronin gimbal, tested Kalman filters to fuse the UAV's IMU and GPS data, and ran computer vision models on a Jetson Xavier.
2025 - Present
Pursuing a B.S. in Mechanical Engineering, Class of 2028. Cumulative GPA: 3.57/4.0. Currently taking Mechanics of Deformable Bodies and Dynamics. View coursework
Completed: Statics, Elements of Materials Engineering, Engineering Analysis & Numerical Methods, Applied Electrical Theory, Foundations of Engineering Practice.
In progress: Mechanics of Deformable Bodies, Dynamics, Thermodynamics, Fluid Dynamics, Mechanical Vibrations, Engineering Design & Economics, Statistics for Engineering Applications.
2021 - 2024
I took three years of Engineering Technology at the Advanced Technology Center. This taught me about the engineering design process and the different fields of engineering. In my final year, I worked on a personal capstone project(an underwater ROV). Engineering projects done in this course can be found here.
2021-2025
I previously attended the Math and Science Academy at Ocean Lakes High School. Some notable subjects taken include Multivariable Calculus and Differential Equations, Physics C Electricity and Magnetism, Physics C Mechanics, AP Chemistry, and AP Computer Science A.
Summer 2022 - 2026
I worked as a lifeguard in 2022 and was promoted to manager after obtaining a Pool Operators Certification. Duties include maintaining the pool's PH and Chlorine levels, managing the lifeguards, and interacting with guests.
Summer 2021 - 2026
For several years, I have helped to coach my neighborhood swim team the Alanton Bolts. I help manage the kids and assist them with their swimming technique.
2021 - 2025
As an alumni of Brickell Academy(ODS), I helped staff the annual Leadership Workshops of 2023 and 2024 over the months leading up to the workshop. Throughout the camp, the students learn how to work with each other and build their leadership skills. As the 2025 coordinator, I was responsible for leading the middle school staff(~40 volunteers) in preparing material for the camp.

Hardware / Entrepreneurship · Still Running
Hand-wired 4-bit computer-inspired circuit art that started as a winter break build and turned into a real product test — an Instagram page, an Etsy shop, one sale. Now building a second, functionally-real version and researching how to automate the wiring itself.

A work-in-progress research log building a reasoning loop that lets a small local vision-language model perceive, hypothesize, act, and self-correct in unfamiliar interactive games from the ARC-AGI-3 benchmark, where humans score ~100% and the best public systems are still near 1%.
Robotics & Marine Engineering
Senior project designing and building an underwater ROV with telemetry system for marine environment analysis and oyster farming decisions. This comprehensive project involved mechanical design, electrical systems, and software development for underwater exploration and data collection.
In my free time, I enjoy weightlifting with my good buddies. My current total stands at 1035 with a 375 lb squat, 265 lb bench, and 395 lb deadlift. I'm aiming for a 315 lb bench this winter and a 405 lb squat and deadlift this fall for a 1125 total. My full training log can be found here.
One of my biggest hobbies is photography. I have enjoy being able to capture and frame moments in a single frame. My experience is limited to the handful of family trips over the past 5 years as well as photography using both myself and my pets as subjects. My photography portfolio can be found here.
As another possible career path, becoming a pilot has always interested me. While I am current limited to flying drones, I hope to one day get my pilots licence and fly recreationally or potentially professionaly.
